On August 4, 2026 Cloudflare gave AI agents a wallet, and every publisher asked the same question: what is my crawler traffic actually worth? This page answers it with measured numbers from one origin rather than a projection. Over 20 days our server logged 5,227 AI crawler requests and 7 human visitors referred by an AI answer — a ratio of 746.7 to 1. Priced at a tenth of a cent per request, that traffic is worth $7.84 a month; at a full cent, $78.41.

The more interesting finding is on the other side of the transaction: 18.6% of the agent requests we could verify carried no verifiable identity at all, and a wallet is of no use to a caller that does not have one. All figures below were measured on this domain between 2026-07-25 and 2026-08-13; the Cloudflare product details were read from Cloudflare’s own pages on 2026-08-17.

What Cloudflare Shipped, and What It Did Not

Cloudflare Wallets gives an AI agent two things it has never had: a stable, readable name and a way to pay. The name lives at cloudflare.pay — Cloudflare’s own example is research.example.cloudflare.pay. The money lives in an Account Wallet a human funds and controls, which delegates capped spending to Virtual Wallets that agents drive through API keys, with an allowance, an allow list, and a maximum transaction size.

The sell side already existed. The Monetization Gateway, opened to a waitlist on 2026-07-01, lets a site charge for “web pages, datasets, APIs, or MCP tools” by answering with HTTP 402 and a price. Wallets is the buyer that the Monetization Gateway was waiting for. Both settle over x402, the open protocol Cloudflare developed with Coinbase, which charges zero protocol fees and is chain-agnostic.

That is the announcement. The gap between the announcement and a working toll booth is wider than the coverage suggested, and the gaps are worth stating as gaps rather than filling with estimates.

The last row is the one that makes this post necessary. Cloudflare supplies the plumbing and leaves the number to you, and nobody can tell you what the number is worth without knowing your crawl volume. So we measured ours.

Methodology

A Cloudflare Worker sits in front of this domain’s origin and writes one row per request for three categories: a user agent matching a known AI crawler, a Referer header from an AI answer surface, and any request to /data/, /api/, or /llms.txt regardless of user agent. Ordinary human pageviews are not recorded at all, and raw client IP addresses are never stored.

The window is 2026-07-25 to 2026-08-13, 20 days, and it is a complete census of this origin over that window rather than a sample. Four short self-test intervals were excluded. Network identity fields — including Cloudflare’s verified_bot classification — were only instrumented from 2026-08-09, so the verification figures below rest on a four-day sub-window of 795 requests, not on the full 5,227.

The monthly and annual figures are the measured 20-day count scaled linearly (261.35 requests per day). No seasonality adjustment is applied because 20 days is too short to observe any. The per-request prices are our modeling assumptions, not Cloudflare quotes — Cloudflare’s published examples span “$0.001 base fee plus a $0.01 per MB charge” and “a few cents per web search, billed per call”, so we bracket a tenth of a cent to one cent and show the whole ladder rather than picking one.

Measured inputs: 5,227 crawler requests over 20 days, 261.35 per day, about 7,840 per month. The forgery column removes the 459 requests (8.8% of all traffic) that asked for paths like .env and .git that no legitimate crawler requests. That is a floor, not an estimate — a forger requesting an ordinary post URL is indistinguishable from a real crawler in the fields we record.

Two details inside the total matter more than the total. The first is composition: 591 of those requests, 11.3%, went to machine endpoints/data/*.json, /api/posts.json, /llms.txt. Those are precisely what the Monetization Gateway calls datasets, and they are the requests most defensibly priced above a page view, because the consumer is unambiguously a machine and the artifact is structured for it.

The second is the comparison that makes the number feel different. Matching even the smallest figure in the table — $7.84 a month — through display advertising would take roughly 784 pageviews at a $10 RPM. Over the same 20 days, AI answer surfaces sent this site 7 human visitors, or about 10.5 a month. The toll monetizes the 746 crawls; advertising monetizes the 1 visit. At this ratio those are not competing revenue lines. They are different orders of magnitude of the same event.

None of which makes $7.84 a month a business. It makes it a measurement, and the measurement scales with crawl volume rather than audience size — which is the genuinely new thing about this market. A site with a thousand times our traffic is not necessarily crawled a thousand times more, and a site with our traffic and ten times the structured data might be crawled far more than we are.

The Identity Problem the Wallet Does Not Solve

Matthew Prince framed the launch this way: when an AI agent knocks on your door, you should know who sent it. Our logs contain a precise counterexample.

On 2026-08-01 at 11:25:09, thirteen distinct bot identities first appeared on this server within 30 milliseconds of each other — GPTBot, Bytespider, ClaudeBot, Meta-ExternalAgent, OAI-SearchBot, anthropic-ai, Cohere, Google-Extended, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot, Perplexity-User, CCBot, and an unnamed data consumer, with first timestamps spanning 11:25:09.531 to 11:25:09.561. Thirteen companies did not coincidentally begin crawling this site in the same thirtieth of a second. One caller cycled through the user-agent strings of thirteen.

That is the state of bot identity without cryptography, and it is exactly what Cloudflare’s handle is meant to fix: a wallet handle is a human-readable name for a Web Bot Auth keypair, which is a real signature rather than a self-reported string. The design is right. The problem is what it presumes.

A wallet is only reachable by a caller that already has a verifiable identity. In our four-day verification window, 148 of 795 requests — 18.6% — carried no identity Cloudflare would confirm. That figure needs care in both directions: “unverified” means Cloudflare did not confirm the connection, which is not proof of forgery, since a vendor absent from the verified-bot list produces the same result. But it is also not a number a payment layer can convert into revenue.

So the honest projection for a small publisher is narrower than the headline. A toll monetizes the verified fraction of agent traffic and blocks or ignores the rest. Against unverified and forged traffic, the Monetization Gateway is a security control that happens to bill, not a revenue line. Those are both worth having. They are not the same thing, and conflating them is how a $7.84 measurement gets sold as a business model.

The Bigger Picture: One Company on Both Sides of the Toll

Cloudflare now supplies the buyer, the seller, and the referee. It issues the agent’s identity through Web Bot Auth, decides which bots count as verified through the list our own measurements depend on, provides the gateway that sets the toll, and as of August holds the wallet that pays it. It also sits in front of roughly a fifth of the web.

For a publisher our size this is straightforwardly convenient — none of that infrastructure was going to get built here. It is also a concentration worth naming plainly, because the layer being consolidated is the one that determines whether a request is legitimate, and that determination is now upstream of whether it is billable.

There is a narrower version of the same problem in this post. Our verification figures come from Cloudflare’s verified_bot field, so we are measuring Cloudflare’s infrastructure with Cloudflare’s own instrument. We have no independent way to check it. Stating that is not a hedge; it is the actual epistemic position, and any publisher reasoning about agent payments from Cloudflare telemetry is in it too.

We predicted the direction of this in our July analysis of the AI crawler ecosystem: the step from “AI company pays to crawl” to “your research agent carries a budget and pays per page it reads” is small. It took six weeks. What the prediction missed is that the payment layer would arrive before the identity layer was finished, which is the reverse of the order the economics require.

Four Open Questions

Everything above this line is measured. Everything in this section is our judgment, and we are flagging the switch deliberately: these are the four questions we cannot settle with a 20-day log, written down now so that the monthly updates can score them later.

Can machine traffic pay for the human traffic it replaced?

The arithmetic is friendlier than it looks. Our ratio is 746.7 crawls per referred human. At $0.001 per crawl those 746.7 requests are worth $0.75, while the one human visitor they came with is worth about a cent at a $10 RPM — the toll beats the ad by roughly 75 to 1 on the same event.

So the conversion is not the problem. The scale is. Seventy-five times a very small number is still $7.84 a month, and no per-request price fixes that, because the constraint is our crawl volume rather than our pricing.

We think the uncomfortable part is what that implies about incentives. Crawl volume tracks how much structured, frequently-updated content a site publishes — not how many readers it has. If tolls ever become a real revenue line, the site optimized for crawlers outearns the site optimized for readers. That is answer-engine optimization with a payment attached, and we do not think the industry has looked squarely at it yet. Scoring condition: if our crawl-to-referral ratio falls below 100:1, human traffic is recovering and this calculation changes.

Who pays twice?

This is the one question our logs can actually quantify. Of 5,227 crawler requests, 1,041 (19.9%) were answer-time fetches — a model reading a page to answer a live question, not to train. One page absorbed 503 of them, on all 20 days of the window: about 25 fetches a day of a table that changes once a week.

Under per-request pricing, that is roughly 175 charges for each revision of the content. x402 has no revisit exemption and no content-hash rule, so an unchanged page bills again on every read. The publisher calls that revenue; the buyer calls it paying repeatedly for one fact.

There is a second layer we cannot observe at all: a user who already pays a subscription and whose agent then spends from a wallet on top of it. Nothing in our logs distinguishes that from any other fetch.

Our read is that the honest billing unit is the revision, not the request — and almost nobody is selling that way. The first move in the right direction is not a price change but a declaration: Visa’s Trusted Agent Protocol adds a tag to the Signature-Input header stating whether an agent is browsing or purchasing. Once a request states its purpose, charging differently for training, answering, and buying becomes possible. Scoring condition: a revisit exemption or content-hash rule appearing in x402 or the Monetization Gateway.

Will people actually hand an agent a wallet?

We have no data here, and neither does anyone else yet. The closest proxy is x402’s own split: 94,060 buyers against 22,000 sellers in the 30 days to 2026-07-14 — buy-side interest running 4.3x ahead of sell-side — though we cannot tell how many of those buyers are people rather than developers testing.

An agent spending its owner’s money is a broadly expected future. We are less sure about the first eighteen months of it, and we think the friction shows up somewhere other than where the guardrails are pointed. Cloudflare’s spending caps, allow lists, and maximum transaction sizes bound how much can go wrong. They do not say who is responsible when it does. A card has chargebacks; a stablecoin payment does not. The question that stalls adoption is unlikely to be “can my agent pay” and much more likely to be “my agent bought the wrong thing, now what”. Scoring condition: the first published dispute-resolution terms from any agent-wallet provider, which we would expect once Virtual Wallets actually ship.

Does the money stay in stablecoins?

Note first what Cloudflare actually named: USDC and “Open USD”. USDT is not mentioned, and the chains are unpublished.

We think “crypto or cards” is the wrong framing, because the card networks are already inside this. In October 2025 Cloudflare shipped agent-commerce work with Visa and Mastercard, built on the same Web Bot Auth signatures the wallet handle is built on, and running over conventional card rails. Visa, Mastercard, and Stripe are also among the x402 Foundation’s founding members.

So the layer that consolidates is identity, not currency. One signature scheme underneath, and the payment rail chosen by size: stablecoins where the transaction is a fraction of a cent and card fees would exceed the principal, card rails where an agent buys something a person would recognize as a purchase. x402’s mean transaction was about $0.32 — a value where no card network can compete on fees. Scoring condition: if that mean climbs past roughly $5, card rails become viable at the low end and the split we are predicting collapses.

What a Small Publisher Should Actually Do

Do not turn on a toll yet. At our volume the revenue is a rounding error against the risk of blocking crawlers that feed answer engines, and the sell side of x402 had only 22,000 participants against 94,060 buyers in the 30 days to 2026-07-14. Being early on the sell side of a two-sided market means being early to a market with no demand at your door.

Do instrument now. This is the part that is not recoverable later. We can write this post only because a Worker started logging on 2026-07-25; the crawl counts for the weeks before that do not exist anywhere and never will. Instrumentation costs almost nothing and the data it captures is strictly non-retroactive.

Measure the composition, not just the total. The 11.3% of our requests hitting machine endpoints is the segment with the clearest pricing story, and we would not have known it was 11.3% without separating it. If your structured data is being read more than your pages, that is the asset.

Watch the verified share, not the crawl count. The number that determines whether any of this becomes revenue is the fraction of agent traffic carrying a verifiable identity. Ours is 81.4% over four days, which is far too short a window to trust. That is the number we will be tracking monthly.

Limitations

  • One site, 20 days. A complete census of one origin, not a sample of the web. Our crawl volume is not evidence about yours.
  • The verification figures rest on four days and 795 requests. Network identity fields were only instrumented on 2026-08-09. The 18.6% unverified share is the weakest number on this page and the one most likely to move.
  • Per-request prices are modeled, not quoted. Cloudflare publishes example prices in its documentation but sets no per-crawl rate; the $0.001–$0.010 ladder is our bracket around those examples.
  • Linear scaling from 20 days to a month and a year. No seasonality is observable in a 20-day window, so none is applied.
  • The 8.8% forgery share is a floor derived from one behavioral pattern, and AI referrals are undercounted because clients strip the Referer header, so 746.7:1 is an upper bound on the ratio.
  • We did not transact. No wallet was funded and no 402 was served; funding is not available yet. Everything here prices measured traffic against published mechanics, and nothing here is an observation of a completed payment.

Update Cadence and Changelog

This page is refreshed monthly, on the same cycle as the AI Crawler Observatory traffic report, with the window extended as the log accumulates. The next update covers the window ending 2026-09-13. Each update adds a changelog row rather than silently overwriting, because the change in the verified share over time is the finding, not the snapshot.
